Trackbacking testing.
Jim Edwards and I were doing some trackback testing with an online training application that I'm testing. He kindly allowed me to send him an irrelevant trackback. But Jim Edwards is a no-nonsense entrepreneure and Internet marketer. He's is not a hype man. He delivers great content and useful products to help you run your online business. So instead of making this a completely useless post I've edited it to give it some degree of usefulness.
Thanks Jim. The testing went perfectly. It should work well for our training objectives.

You said: "But Jim Edwards is a no-nonsense entrepreneure and Internet marketer. He's is not a hype man."
So I click over to his site and I get this big "roll out" style popup that slides over the page, is larger than my screen, and it shakes a couple of times to get my attention (as if just covering the entire browser page isn't enough?) It's full of large red text, exclamation points, and yellow highlighted text touting the benefits and saying that I can learn out to make my "sales go up 250% literally overnight!..." So if that's not "hype", tell me what it is! :-) PS - If you're not seeing the popup that I speak of, then go into your cookies and delete the cookie for Jim's site and refresh the page and the popup should reappear. Interesting...I never saw that pop-up. But with that said I know that some messages are marketed to a specific crowd and some messages can appear to be sensational.
However, I know Jim the man and I can tell you that Jim really is about delivering valuable information and he definitely weeds out the myth's and fiction in online marketing. He multimedia newsletter is one of the best around especially his "friday nigh smackdowns" where it talks about some of the craziness in online marketing. I'll go back and check that though. Sometimes pop-ups and such things can be offensive even before they are read for any truth and credibility and I understand that. Pop-ups have been abused and can be quite annoying. With that said, Jim is great guy and his humor and brings a breath of fresh are. Plus he's just a great guy to work with. So for any "apparent" hype in pop-ups should not be confused with a the man or legitimate message for "his" specific audience. He does deliver value and for me has demonstrated the highest levels of integrity. Thanks a lot for even coming by and posting. We all need feedback and I'm sure Jim would benefit from your observations. Thanks for your support in visiting my blog. :-) Regards, TL Re: Jim Blogs Rocks - Test

I guess the lesson here is that one man's hype... is another man's advertising... is another man's sharing information :-)

But my God man, I really must do something about my typing LOL...that last reply of mine is simply ridiculous with errors...*sigh* :-) I had a very late night last night and so this the result of "writing while groggy". ~Thomas Re: Jim Blogs Rocks - Test

Hi guys - great videos and instruction. One question I'm hoping you can address Thomas or Jim, when you entered the traceback ping into your blogging software -
1) Will this not traceback every post to Jim's traceback URL until you remove it from your software? 2) How do you create a traceback for just one of your own blog posts. I see a list of traceback entries I can enter into Moveable Type, but do they not get pinged on EVERY post? Is there a way to enter a traceback against just one of my blog posts? Thanks much... Hi Jeff,
Good question and the answer is no it won't. When you enter the trackback URL it is specific or unique to that particular post. So your comments will only appear on the post whose trackback URL you used. So for example: Blog: Jim Edwards Post/Article: Blogs Are Taking Over The World! TrackBack URL: http://www.myblog.com/trackback-url-001 When I plug the trackback URL for the article "Blogs Are Taking Over The World!" and then publish my, my blog will only send the trackback entry to that specific trackback URL with is unique to that article. When you enable TrackBack on your blog, every post you publish is also published with a unique TrackBack URL. So you cannot TrackBack generally across the board using a single TrackBack URL. You would have to trackback using each and every trackback URL to do that. Most people don't since most people don't have a reason to do so but of course spammers are a different story. This also means that you cannot create a trackback for just one of your blog posts but what you CAN do is disable trackback on a per post basis. So when you publish an article and you don't want someone to trackback it for spam reasons or any other purpose your software should allow you to disable it on a per post or article basis. Let me know if this doesn't answer you question accurately. Thanks Jeff! ~Thomas Re: Re: Re: Jim Blogs Rocks - Test

Thanks Thomas - I think I am asking something different.
The only place I seem to have to add a traceback url (let's say I wanted to add a traceback to your blog message) is in the General Settings within Moveable Type - where I can list a group of traceback URL's THen, let's say I create a post to my blog discussing this message on your blog. How is the link made between my message referencing your blog and the traceback URL that is in the list wthin general settings? THere doesn't seem to be a way to register a traceback link in a particular post within MT or am I mistaken? Thanks much... Jeff Re: Re: Re: Re: Jim Blogs Rocks - Test

Ah...I see. Okay.
Here's what you need to do. As an example...let's say you wanted to trackback this particular post. See the trackback section below? There is a trackback URL list there. That is because I have trackback turned on and enabled for this post. You would select that trackback URL and copy it. Then you would go back to your MovableType software and go to your web editor for MovableType. Now, at the very bottom of your editor page you will see additional options to set on the post before publishing such as post status, comments, etc. Notice in the bottom right you will see and window that says URLs to ping. You just paste in the trackback URL you copied from my blog post into that window before you hit the button to publish your post. You software will then use my trackback URL to send me notification in the form of your blog post title, excerpt and link being written to my blog article as we've been discussion here. Please not that you can drop in more than one trackback URL into that box if you are trackbacking more than one post because you are talking about more than one post. You will also see the option (in MovableType) for Accept TrackBack Pings. If you check that box before you publish you are turning TrackBack on for that post which results in your blog software producing a unique trackback URL for your article that someone else could use to trackback you. Remember to use trackback when you are talking about someone and not to just get backlinks. There needs to be contextual relevance. Does this help? ~Thomas Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Jim Blogs Rocks - Test
