<RANT>
Alright it's pretty early EDT at about 2am approximately.

I was researching a topic for another blog I'm considering publishing. I'm searching with some of my favorite social search directories like Eurekster, Technorati, Feedster and BlogDigger.

Apparently I hit the search results shortly after someone blogged and pinged their pages into the blogosphere. The top results of my searches were dominated by pages that were completely useless to me. What was even more irritating is that fact that at least the top 10 results in Eurekster, Technorati and Feedster were dominated by these pages. Only BlogDigger didn't show a single one of these pages.  Feedster of course gave me the option to exclude those Blogspot.com results.

This person took a page generator and set up about 80 blogspot.com blogs and cranked out useless pages all pointing to various domains duplicated across all of the domains (link farm) ...I'm sure you know the ilk of which I'm referring to...and pinged the pages in.

This is definitely becoming a bit of a distraction albeit in the background of all the news and activity around blogs and RSS. Ask David Sifry and Paul Chaney what they think about this growing trend.

Now linking to the offending pages is out of the question since I'd prefer not to share my bit of page rank with the offender and I'm not the dramatic type anyway. But I do counsel my clients and anyone else that asks me about this practice to stay away from this IF you are serious about blogging and building brand reputation. The barrier of entry to blogging success is low enough for anyone to do a blog successfully but high enough that one of several simple rules apply for generating genuine traffic and search engine rankings which can be a huge hurdle for those looking at blogging as their quick solution to seo/sem domination, massive traffic and a windfall of revenue.

I usually end my short reply to inquiries about blog and ping with "Do you see any successful bloggers using this strategy for their success? No, you don't". Blogs and Pings are a wonderful thing. It's definitely goodness all around for everyone but when it's used to create blog spammed link farms and useless pages in search results, those practicing this are negatively impacting others.

Yeah, yeah...yada, yada...another rant about spam. *Sigh*...oh well.
